Cinnamon Star Ornaments

These star ornaments were made with cinnamon-applesauce dough and decorated with white acrylic paint. The dough is easy to roll out like cookie dough and can be cut into any shape.

The Mission of the Children's House

Every year the crafting community at Chicago Waldorf School gets together to create a little world of magic for the young children who attend our Holiday Fair. We labor for months to create handmade toys and gifts out of natural materials like wool and wood and acorn caps. Then, on the day of the fair, we turn a classroom into a winter wonderland filled with our work, and the children go shopping all by themselves with a basket of golden nuts for their currency.

It's a magical experience for them, and it is always a joy to see the delight -- or the deep thought when hard choices must be made -- on their faces. But my favorite part is knowing that every child walks out of the Children's House with something not made out of plastic in a factory, but handcrafted with love.

This blog was created to document some of our recent work, but anyone looking for ideas for simple, Waldorf-inspired, natural crafts is more than welcome to take inspiration.

(Please note that some of the toys described have small parts. They are intended for children age 3 and older.)
